Xaiyi Sun (MID '11)
Last summer, Xaiyi Sun completed an internship with Project to End Human Trafficking (PEHT) Pittsburgh. PEHT is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2004 as part of the anti-slavery movement. The organization engages in anti-trafficking coalition building, educational outreach, direct service to victims, and collaboration with other national and international organizations in the global fight against human trafficking.
As an intern for PEHT, Sun gained firsthand experience in the grant writing process and wrote weekly essays for PEHT's website on the domestic and global vision on human trafficking, society and gender, the human rights of women and children, trends in civil society and the role of younger generations in enhancing social justice. She also worked with executive director to write letters of inquiry and grant requests. "The internship enhanced my analytical thinking about justice and human rights. I not only improved my writing skills but also broaden my knowledge of transnational crime in international affairs," Sun explains. Sun, originally from Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China, will graduate in April 2011 with a Masters in International Development and a major in Development Planning and Environmental Sustainability.
